Happy Juneteenth!
Juneteenth, or Freedom Day, marks the day on June 19th when the United States finally abolished slavery in 1865. To observe this important day of remembrance, I'm creating a Juneteenth blog that will be devoted to sharing stories and facts related to African American history and celebrating the accomplishments of African Americans throughout the country.
This blog will feature articles about the history of Juneteenth and its impact on US society today, interviews with prominent African Americans about their experiences, vignettes from authors who write about race and culture in America, educational resources for teaching children about Juneteenth and its importance, and more. My goal is to create an open space for learning, understanding, and growth in our community by exploring the many facets of African American history.
I believe this blog is essential work to recognize our collective past so that we may continue honoring freedom on Juneteenth each year going forward. Together we can learn more about how far we have come as a nation since slavery was abolished –– and how much further we still need to go for true equality.
